And you will be keeping Scam School in business. The business of stealing beer. Do you guys have different house rules on whether or not you can promote a pawn to a queen? Or can you have two queens on the table? Is that established? What's the story with that Casinoslots South Africa? Because I've run into some people who have house rules where you can't have two queens, or something stupid. That's just dumb. That's made up stupidity, Brushwood. All right, well I will say, just to be totally fair here, that anything goes. You can promote any piece you want in the game. That's fine. Here's the puzzle. And the puzzle is I want you to imagine we had an epic battle. Here's the set up, right here, all right? It's white's turn. And in fact, I'll spin it around so you can be white. It's white's turn, and white needs to mate in one move. What is the one move under the conditions I've set up where it's possible for white to mate? I'm thinking of [? crowning, ?] but then you take. So that doesn't work. When you take. So what you're saying is whatever this guy turns into, the king could take and he's protected. That's not a mate. So it has to mate on the move, right? Yes. It has to be in one, in one. So in other words, the black king can have no move. In a single move, it has to suddenly become checkmate. And then we've got the queen here. Which is good, because that puts him in check. Right, but it doesn't mate, because you've still got your space. So when you say got your space, you mean-- You still got this move. Could move there. Right. Good point, good point. So this is the move that I'm trying to avoid. Right, you want to not allow. I have to prevent you from doing this move and attacking you at the same time. OK, so you don't like the queen, because even if you check there or check there, either way the king can move in. You can move there. That's good, that's good. And then the pawn there, you move there. And if the pawn promotes, even if it turns into a queen-- The king takes. Takes, right. You still have that spot. Right, gotcha. What about the rook? Anything you can do with the rook? No Brian, that's stupid. No, I don't see it. I can't really do anything with the rook that can actually give you-- I mean, especially the pawn's in the way. Yeah, the pawn's in the way. Of course, yeah. Good point. I don't see it. I can do this move, but I'm still in the same spot where-- That's true, you'd be able to move there. So, if I have to mate you in one, it seems like from my perspective, that the only thing I can do it with is with the queen. If someone else figures it out, are they allowed to chime in? I'm not going to lie, there's one person in this room and I posed the puzzle. He solved it in ten seconds. Who wants to know the answer to this one? Three people. Everyone else leave. What were the initial conditions that I set up? I said two things. Do you remember what they were, Edwin? Oh, OK. Well, if you go like that. No, it's white's turn, it's white's turn. No, you said it wasn't. OK, you did. You're right, I did mention that it was white's turn. I mentioned that is was white's move. And I get to make one move. There goes my one move. And if white could actually move black's piece, that would be way convenient, right? But I said two things. I said it's white move, white needs to mate in one. But before that, I cleared up an ambiguity. I said that there are some house rules where they don't like you having two queens or whatever. So I said for the record, you could promote to any piece in the entire game. Including a king? No. Well no, you can't have two kings. That would be just silly. Even is you promote to a Bishop, it can still take it. What if you promoted-- To a black knight? Checkmate. But technically, that's not even-- you can't do that. But technically-- and that's the key to a great scam, is you've got to lay it out right in front of them to where only after the fact-- you're pissed off, and I'm sorry. I'll buy you a beer is what I'll do. That's how you do scam school. Now, I have no idea if this is true or not, but the story I heard is that back in the 17th century, some Russian grandmaster posed this problem, because until then, there had never been a case where anybody would ever want to promote to a piece of another color, and that he posed this puzzle as an answer for why you need to make it an official rule that you can only promote within your same color. I have no idea if that's true or not, and I'm sure the folks who watch Scam School at home are going to send me emails saying whether or not that's the case. But I hope you guys enjoyed it. And Edwin. Thank you. You were a super awesome sport. Thank you guys. Congratulations to Elliot, and all you guys are awesome. First and foremost, want to give a huge thanks to Kurt Andersen, friend of the show, for sharing with us that puzzle we had to promote to the black piece. That one blew my mind. And I loved how many chess experts it fooled, including here at Stanford. How awesome is that? Of course, I want to hear about your success stories and failure stories. So hit us up at the forums at scamschool.tv, where you can see all of our episodes right back to episode one. If you're doing the Twitter thing, why don't you follow me at twitter.com'shwood. This week is chess puzzles that fool the smartest people at Stanford. Look, we're clearly at Stanford. This episode of Scam School brought you by Go Daddy. In the year 2657, in the History of Magic Museum, there's going to be a dark, forgotten, cobweb-covered corner. And it'll be dedicated to Scam School, the only show dedicated to social engineering at the bar and on the street.
I'm your host, Brian Brushwood. And this week, we are at Stanford University, where we get some of the smartest people at one of the smart universities. And we're going to fool them with some chess scams. Get ready to be blown away by how dumb you and I are compared to them. There's one of them right there. All right, first of all, thank you guys so much for joining me. This is like a dream come true to be able to swoop in to freaking Stanford campus and to hang out with the chess club, and come up with idiotic puzzles that I have no rights to pose to the smartest people on campus, all right. So I'm very flattered right at the onset. But here's what I want to do. I figured it'd be fun to start things off, we're going to do a little puzzle here. Normally I would do this for a free beer, but since we don't have any beer here, I'm going to say whoever gets it first will get a copy my book, Cheats, Cons, Swindles and Tricks, 57 Ways to Scam a Free Drink. But you notice I had all of you guys pull out eight pawns. All right, now normally this should be done with eight queens, but I figured we don't have enough queen pieces to go around. So we're going to pretend all of these pawns are queens. Who can set up all those pieces, pretending they're all queens, set up all eight queens such that no two queens threaten each other, all right? Ready, set, go. I love seeing everybody spring into action here, this is awesome. Whoa, whoa. We got a potential? Hold on. Oh, in your face, suckers. What time do we have, John? Four minutes, 50 seconds, all right. You got it? You got it? Hold on, let's see. Let's see. Check their work, check their work. Yeah. They got it. Holy crap, they got it! That was great. What's the final time? What's the final time? Five minutes, 35 seconds. We couldn't figure out this one. Yeah. No, I am. That's right, that's right. And in fact, I'll show you the version I came up-- well, I say I came up. I didn't come up with any of this. The version I learned, and I just remembered the number, 3162574. And so the first one, you start up in the corner. And then you just go three, one, six, 25-- oh yeah, six. That's six. Thank you. 74, like that. But I'm sure there's a number of different solutions for it. But I'm really impressed. Obviously, for people as capable as you guys are, even then, having eight people all simultaneously trying to solve it, that took a really long time. That was a good one. Give these guys a big round of applause. That was awesome. All right, so you're going to make yourself a video podcast, make yourself famous on the internet? Maybe you want to talk about your opinions about late 1970s anime, so you registered Gamelancast. Question. Are you going to register it as a .org, pretend you're a community organization? .net, oh look, I'm an ISP. No. You're going to do .tv, because that's what all the cool kids are doing, especially right here at scamschool.tv. And guess who we used to register our domain? That's right. (energetic music) - Hello. Welcome to the show. My name's Matt Santoro. And this episode's brought to you by teachers that really don't like cell phones.
(speaking in foreign language) (crash) Scientists may have discovered the fountain of youth this week. Ok. Well not literally. But genetic scientists at Harvard Medical School successfully reversed aging in lab mice. They were able to transform mice from the equivalent of an 80 year old to a teenager. The idea behind this research is that it might one day be possible for humans. Well that sure is good news. I'd like to get my (bleep) on. It's pretty complicated, but essentially this is how they did it. There's a special enzyme called telomerase that is found in both human and mice DNA. They modified the DNA of the mouse to be able to turn this enzyme on and off. When the enzyme was off, the mice aged rapidly. And when they turned the enzyme back on, they expected the aging to slow down and stabilize. But what actually happened was the signs of aging reversed. Now old people shouldn't be too excited about this because it's only theoretically possible for humans right now. But personally, I can't wait until it becomes possible for us, mostly because plastic surgeons won't be needed as much, which means it's much less likely for things like this go happen. (shudders) But one of the most positive things out of this story is that the enzyme also has regenerative properties. which means there's potential in the future for paralyzed people to walk again or cure people with diseases that were previously uncurable. There might even be hope for Hugo. - There's nothing wrong with me. And I ate all your chips. - There aren't any chips in the house. - Yea. The ones that say "paint". (chuckles) - The next big story is that Google's planning even stronger copyright protection against the content uploaded to the sites it owns like YouTube. The rules are already strict but now there's the possibility that if you put anything in your video that doesn't belong 100 percent to you, your video could be taken down within 24 hours. This is because between 2004 and 2009 Google recieved over 10,000 complaints from over 5,000 copyright holders. And that number just keeps growing. Now I get that Google has to look out for itself. But this is just excessive. To me, it's the classic case of a few people ruining it for everybody. Because the vast majority of those complaints were due to people uploading songs and movie clips, et cetera. It's stupid to censor people like me that put out unique content, but might want to use a picture from Google images here and there. As far as I'm concerned, you're just making yourself look stupid, Google. Oh, what? You're going to start censoring my background now? I don't care. I'm still going to continue the show. Go ahead. Censor anything you want. Wait. What? The lamb-sheep-ram? How is that copyrighted? Oh, nice. So you censor my face. That's real nice. You know what? I don't care. I'm still going to continue talking. Oh, nice. That's what it's come down to? Really? Really? I'm a pretty little girl. (stammers) What did you just make me say? Oh, you're going to change my words now. Nice. That's good. Well at least you can't censor everything, Google. (sucks teeth) Hm. That's it. I'm investing Yahoo. (beep) (bass-heavy rap music) Well that sure is good news because I'd like to get my hump on. Well that sure is good news because I'd sure like to get all up in some punani. Well that's good because I can't wait for some rubbing. (laughs) The hell am I talking about? Entering Knowledge in Short-Term Memory (STM)
Cram sessions and all-nighters are largely ineffective because they primarily rely on STM. At the most you can only remember 5 to 9 items or facts at a time. If you don’t review these facts constantly, it will only stay in your memory for 15 to 20 seconds. Most students will find their minds blanking out during the test. Even if they do pass, everything that they have learned while cramming will be completely forgotten 2 weeks later. An excellent technique for inputting information in STM is “chunking”, wherein you reorganize related facts into easy-to-memorize clusters or “chunks”. Limitations of this article prevent us from going into detail about this technique, so simply check out online tutorials. Encoding Knowledge in Long-Term Memory (LTM) Knowing how to study well for tests would entail learning the strategies by which knowledge and information that has been inputted in STM are to be transferred and firmly encoded in LTM. Overlearning is one such strategy wherein you “practice” memorizing and recalling facts until you remember them perfectly. This strategy was used when you memorized the multiplication table. Another strategy, called Elaboration, involves organizing new, learned facts so that you can easily connect them to the existing information that is stored inside your head. For further reading, you can research on effective strategies like Mnemonics, the Peg Word Method, and the Loci Method on the Internet. Knowledge Retrieval Retrieving the knowledge that you have learned from your memory can be very easy if you had followed the strategies that have been mentioned earlier. Essay service always help to students with exams. Test and exams should never be viewed as the “enemy”. In fact, they have been designed to help you remember the things you have learned. The main bulk of exams contain “cues” for the recall of specific facts. This would include True or False, Matching Type and Multiple Choice. The more difficult Fill In The Blank, Enumeration and Essay questions are to test your understanding of the material you had learned. The easier test sections will provide you with sufficient cues on how to answer the more difficult parts of the exam. Use these cues to allow your mind to dig deeper into your memory for the details. Hiking is very fun and rewarding. The fresh air, beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife are just a part of what has made hiking so very popular. The low cost and health benefits attract people of all ages. Walking has long been shown to be one of the most low impact and beneficial exercises you can do. It's important to be well prepared, however, especially for longer hikes. Getting back to where you started from and having a good time should be your main objectives. This means having the right gear and good information about the route you're hiking. We hope you find the following information useful.
Trail Details Get a good idea of where you will be going including the type of terrain and the distance of the trip. Find out the difficulty of the terrain so you know whether or not it's a trail you'd like to try and what sort of gear you'll need to take with you. Tips such as "stay left of the river" often make the difference between success and failure so do a little research if you can. Asking other professional hikers you encounter among cv writers is also a great way to garner information. On longer or more obscure trails try to bring a map of your route to avoid confusion. Sometimes trails can be partly hidden by vegetation or washed out from heavy rains. Also, remember that fresh snow does a great job of hiding trails. If the trail is hidden a GPS is very helpful or you can also look for cairns. A cairn is a pile of stones stacked by previous hikers to show the proper route. Food & Water Start off by being well satiated (not stuffed) and very well hydrated. This will allow you to carry less and have a good level of fuel in your body before you ever begin. Bring about 200 calories of food and 12-24 ounces of water for every hour you will be hiking. This can vary quite a bit dependent upon the difficulty of the trail, as well as the weather. Try to bring a little more than you need in case you are unexpectedly delayed. If it's going to be a hot day and you have a steep climb planned, bring plenty of extra water. If you are working your body hard and perspiring heavily, you should take a drink at least once every ten minutes. Don't over do it and listen to the needs of your body. Taking smaller drinks can help keep you from feeling bloated or getting stomach cramps. Children usually need to be reminded to take drinks because they will not think about it until they are dehydrated. Weather The weather is one of the most important factors to the success of your hiking adventure. Check it often including right before you go whenever possible. The weather can change very rapidly, especially at higher elevations. On longer hikes, especially in the summer months, it's a good idea to assume the worst of the weather and bring some rain gear. Some hikes, such as high elevation climbs, are safer and more pleasant in the spring or summer. Likewise, hiking in deserts or tropics is usually more enjoyable in the colder months. Equipment Temperatures can vary greatly during the day, especially at higher altitudes. Bring an extra layer for warmth but start out comfortably cool because you will be getting warmer as you go. If there is a possibility for colder weather brings a coat. Rain can hit almost any time so we recommend having a rain poncho on every long hike. They are light and take up almost no space when storing them. It's important to have shoes that fit well to prevent blisters and twisted ankles. Make sure your shoes have plenty of traction for the terrain and are waterproof if needed. If your shoes aren't waterproof you might think about buying some gaiters. A hat and a waterproof sun block with an SPF of at least 30 is a good idea if you're going to be in the Sun for much of the day. A sturdy backpack or camelback are indispensable for carrying extra clothes and supplies. Overheating leads many possible problems such as dehydration and heat stroke. Trail Ethics Since hiking has become so popular with more people on the trails every year, it's important to be courteous to your fellow hikers and leave things as you find them. This includes properly disposing of your trash, staying on the designated trails, leaving plants and minerals as you found them, and picking up after your dog(s) if you have any. Do your part to share the trail. If you meet some people on the trail, it's polite to move over and let them pass, especially if you are a more capable hiker. Since trails often have uneven footing please pay particular attention and slow down when passing by fellow hikers. Hiking is one of the most popular extreme sports. If you are just a beginner, you might think that proper clothing is not necessary for this extreme sport. Unfortunately, most beginners fall into this mistake; hence, ruining their enjoyment during their first hiking trip.
You really do not have to wear elaborative or extremely heavy clothing because it would definitely either slows you down during your walk or it won’t be able to protect you from insects or unexpected fall. Hiking clothing is designed to make your hiking experience comfortable. It keeps you protected because it is made from special cloth that would protect you from rain, heat, insects, or even fall. If you are hiking to virgin mountains, it is advisable to wear long hiking pants. Long pants would protect your legs from insect bites. If your trail would be a long walk, it is also better to wear thick hiking socks for additional cushion. You might as well get nice comfortable hiking shoes. You would not want to spoil your hiking experience because you are limping from pain because of your uncomfortable and inappropriate shoes. Appropriate hiking clothing would make a very big difference in having a good hiking experience. Hiking clothing is designed to keep the cold out and to maintain the heat in the clothing keeping you warm. Hence, even without those heavy jackets, you would not get cold because it comes with a self-systemic purpose of balancing the heat being released from your body even in changing temperature or weather condition. It keeps you dry and comfortable even if you are sweating or in extreme heat and yet keeps you warm in extremely cold weather. Hiking clothing comes with a moisture management purpose where it actually keeps your skin cool when it is sweating. It is almost like a second skin which would not trigger any rashes or allergies during extreme heat especially when you are sweating. Hiking clothing is made from natural fibers that serve as an insulator for colder conditions. The outer covering of the clothing serves as a windbreaker and water resistant which protects you and its inside layer from getting wet when raining or not letting the wind pass in the inside layer making you cold when you are already in an elevated or high land where wind is too much. If you are planning to go on hiking, you might as well plan it properly and invest on buying the correct gear in having a good hiking experience. |
